Biographies (a work in progress)
Medina, Domingo de - An employee of Cortes. Settled in Ciudad Michoacan with a wife with sons and a daughter that married. A son was named Diego Enriquez de Medina. Renteria, Martin de - One of the founders of San Martin in the state of Durango. The Chichimeca had driven off the ranchers in the area forcing the mine to be abandoned due to the lack of supplies and food. Martin Renteria joined Don Pedro de Ahumada in the war against the Chichimeca. Wounded in battle. He joined the forces of Ibarra in 1563 just after the Ahumada campaign. He then moved northwest to the Cuencame region helping found the Sombrete and Llerena. He settled in Llerena. Born c1535, died 1610. There were many children and one was recorded as Mayor de Renteria. Rojo, Francisco - In 1547 he is listed as a land owner and encomiendaro (agent who receives and carries out orders or commissions or who holds a command in the military). He was part of the Coronado Expedition. His son Santos Rojo was born c1535 and died 1614. Santos was married to Beatriz de Ruelas. Their children were Estefania married to Domingo Gil de Latur, Beatriz married to Juan de Uzcanga then Bernardo de Santos Coy (originator of the de los Santos Coy surname), Marriana married to Martin de Ochoa Elijalde and Catalina. Sanchez, Mateo - Was mayordomo to conquistador Francisco de Santa Cruz when he arrived in Mexico. Settled in Colima with a wife and 2 sons. Sosa, Juan Alonso de - was an official in the new city of Merida in 1543 and Royal Treasurer of New Spain in 1553. Married to Ana de Estrada de la Caballeria, daughter of Don Alonso de Estrada Duke of Aragon. Died in 1564. By the end of the century the Estrada, Albornoz and Sosa were well integrated by marriage. Lope de Sosa - He had been Govenor of the Canary Islands but he wanted to come to the New World. He accepted a position as Govenor and Judge in Panama. He made the voyage with his son Juan Alonso de Sosa and a nephew in 1518 but died the day he arrived in Panama. Apparently the hardships of his voyage were too much in his old age. Vasquez de Coronado, Francisco - Led an expedition that crossed Arizona, New Mexico and the panhandle of West Texas from 1540- 1542. Velazquez, Alonso - Settled in Mexico City. Married Isabel de Olmos, the widow of the conquistador Juan de Zamudio.
