Biographies
Umbria, Gonzalo de - Cortes dispatched Gonzalo a sailor by trade on an expediton to Zacatula (central Oaxaca and towards the east coast). On the way they reported seeing fortified buildings that were "stronger and better built than the castle of Burgos". Gonzalo went to Spain to request money for his part in the Conquest. Never returned left Spain again. Usagre, Bartolome de - An artillery specialist in Cortes' army. From the Extremeno section of Spain. Usagre, Diego - Brother of the above mentioned Bartolome. An artillery specilist and one of those in charge in Narvaez' army. These two must have met in battle when Cortes attacked Narvaez. Utrera, Pedro de - From: Utrera, Sevilla. Came to Mexico with Cortes in 1519. There was also a conquistador of Venezuela with this name in 1530. Utrera de Nunez, Francisco - From: Utrera, Sevilla. Came to Mexico with Narvaez in 1520. Valades, Diego - Parents: Alonso Valades and Catalina de Retamosa. Settled in Mexico City. Married Catalina Rodriguez. He had 6 children 4 of them natural. Received a coat of arms dated 29th of April, 1544. Sons: Alonso Valades and Cristobal de Vargas. Grandsons: Diego Valades, Francisco de Salazar, Cristobal Osorio and Pedro de Salazar Martel. A granddaughter married Pedro de Valdes. Valdenebro, Diego de - From: Valdenebro, Valladolid. Came to Santo Domingo in 1498. Was a settler there in 1514. He was in Cuba in 1518 and came to Mexico with Cortes in 1519. He was one of those in Veracruz in 1520 and took part in the conquest of Mexico and on Mexican records from 1525 to 1528. Valdenebro, Francisco de - settled in Tlaxcala. In 1576 at the age of 75 or more he stated that the Tlaxcaltecas helped in the Conquest but were never conpensated. Valdivieso, Juan de - Eventually settled in Mexico City. Married and had children. One being Juan Vazquez de Valdivieso. Grandson: don Juan de Valdivieso. Valenciano Garao, Pedro de - Settled in Mexico City. Married Cerrana Nunez Mancheno (Widow of a friend and fellow conquistador, Bartolome Porras). They had at least 1 daughter named Maria Garao as well as other descendants. Son in law: Doctor Ambrosio de Bustamante. Daughter Maria married Francisco de Albornoz. Valiente, Andres - From: Toro, Zamora. Came to the Indies in 1517 and was in Cuba in 1518. Came to Mexico with Cortes in 1519. Was a secretary of Cortes in 1524 and was on the records of Mexico until 1542. Valladolid, (?) - From: Valladolid, Valladolid. In Cuba in 1518 and to Mexico with Cortes in 1519. Settled in Colima or Zacatula Mexico. Valladolid, Juan de - From: Alberca, Salamanca. In Cuba in 1518 and to Mexico with Cortes in 1519. Valladolid, Rodrigo de - From: Valladolid, Valladolid. Known as "El Gordo". Listed as being killed by the Indians. Valle, Juan del - given a coat of arms. Vandelas (?) - There were 2 brothers with this surname. In Chiapas Mexico in 1524. He said he was of very noble linage. Vazquez, Martin - From: Segovia. Cortes had saved Vazquez from capture. In subsequent trials of Cortes after the conquest, Martin Vazquez could be counted on to testify in Cortes' favor. Cortes had given him the area of Xilotzino to administer. Parents: Francisco and Mari Vazquez. Married a Cuban native and they had 3 sons and a daughter. One son was named Matias Vazquez Lainez. Another being Alonso Vazquez de Lainez. The other was named Francisco Vazquez Lainez. Vazquez de Tapia, Bernaldino - Came to Mexico with Grijalva in an expedition prior to Cortes. Sold his Cuban land grant in order to join Cortes. A conquistador of Panuco and Michoacan and other provinces of Mexico. On Mexican records till 1547. Vejer, Benito de - From: Vejer de la Frontera. Veteran of the wars in Italy. Listed as a drummer in Cortes' army although Bernal Diaz mentions him as a fifer. Settled in Mexico City where he was renting a house for a school of dance. Married to Ana Gomez. Son: Benito Mendez. Granddaughter married: Juan Bravo. Vejarano (Bejarano), Servan - From: Benalcazar. Parents: Anton de Puelles and Catalina Sanchez Vejerano.His second marriage was to Francisca Calderon and they had 8 children. Settled in Nueva Galicia Mx. Velasco, Melchor - From: Valladolid, Valladolid. Father: Alonso Velasco. In Cuba in 1518 and to Mexico with Cortes in 1519. Velasquez, Juan de - During the battle known as "Noche Triste" as the conquistadors were retreating the island city of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City) the Mexica split Cortes' forces by sinking their escape route (causeway) in two. Juan was caught on the wrong side bringing up the rear with Pedro de Alvarado. Settled in Mexico City. He and his wife Isabel de Rojas had no children. Velazquez, Diego - From: Cuellar, Segovia. In this temple it was Alonso who discovered a doorway recently cemented over behind which concealed the vast riches of Mexico. Being a carpenter he also helped build the small ships used to control the lake surrounding Tenochtitlan. While Alonso was in Honduras his wife took another husband.
